I recently saw “The Social Dilemna” on Netflix. Nothing new there for me, but it inspired me to write this post. In this documentary, the ultimate message is not much different from all the other media I consume; we’re super polarized and we need something to unite us. It seems we’re polarized not only from a “post-truth” postmodern, relativistic modern Western culture, but also the big-tech social media algorithms are pushing “fake news” to its users. Fake news sells. Truth is boring. This is true, but it’s also ALWAYS been true. The main difference with our modern high-tech world is that everything is multiplied in degree, so those who want to share fake news, now have the most sophisticated tools ever to do that. People like me who want to share “real news” are also equally gifted with the opportunity to share knowledge/wisdom like we’ve never seen before in (recorded) human history.
How to vanquish fake news? Ethos. Just a few verses from ethos can dispell all illusion and even most suffering of our modern high-tech nonsense world. But for Ethos to work that quickly, one must already be at an adequate level of virtue (Ethos 10.2). There are many other ancient wisdom traditions that I’ll talk about later on, but I wanna spill the beans first. The Ethos can completely eradicate our postmodern woes, easily. Too easily actually. The Ethos is designed to take on much bigger challenges. Alexander the Great was never able to complete his work/manifestation of The Ethos, and he conquered most of the world without losing a battle. This modern fake news world is a joke when faced with the power of ancient wisdom.
Spoiler alert; this is not complicated AT ALL. This “uniting force” or “illumination tool” to get rid of all fake news and polarization has ALWAYS been here with us, in our hearts and minds. The key will be different for different people.
For me as an individual, I’ve graduated from “fake news.” Graduated meaning, I never get emotional, it’s just entertainment, and I have fun! More importantly, I always have the eternal truth, so I never get tripped up by anything in our temporary material world. But for me to do nothing would be selfish. So the key for me is finding ways to teach/illuminate/save others from this nonsense upside down world that so many are stuck in. (black belt, but less than 3rd don)
The key for someone in the most degraded possible position would be to first understand that there is such a thing as fake news, and that it might be a better idea to live according to truth rather than illusion. That may sound unbelievable to you, but there’s MILLIONS of people who actually fit into this category *cough* baby boomers *cough*. (has yet to don the white belt, or enter the dojo)
Someone else may have just recently figured out how to sift through the garbage; see which media are true, which are false, but they’re struggling with the realization/integration of that knowledge. For example, they know that factory farmed meat is bad for their health and the envrionment, and know it well, but just can’t get themselves to stop eating and buying it. Or they know that wearing masks does mostly nothing to prevent viral infection among healthy people, but they do it all the time anyway, just because of the peer pressure, when it isn’t even mandated by law in their district. Another person may be well initiated into this field of study; they know that some things can be true or false, fake or real, but they struggle with determining between the two. Sometimes they think they found the truth, and they get excited and change their life around it, and find out a month later they were completely wrong. Or maybe they have excellent intelligence, but can’t find the right sources to trust, and are too lazy or don’t have enough time to do any significant research. (yellow/green belt)
Seeing the hierarchy is important, and useful. Knowing our place, and the place of everyone around us is not just some gimmick for our egos, its DEEPLY important; its part of our identity as individuals and members of groups.
Wow that was a productive rant! And actually off-topic; the reason I started this blog post was to say that one can (easily) transcend ALL fake news of all kinds, by accepting an ancient wisdom tradition (not just reading or listening to a podcast, accepting means deep in your heart/soul). There are many to choose from, and most all of them are legitimate and very effective. As the man known as Big Bear has said, “the future is the past.”
Hopefully by now you know that I focus on Aristotle and the Vedas, especially Srila Prabhupada books. But considering the shit storm of non sense and ignorance out there, if someone wants to talk to me about the Buddha, or Confucius or LaoZi, or ANY ancient Greek philosopher, I’m thrilled. On that note, “ancient wisdom” in the West means everything UP TO the ancient Greeks. There are individual sages in the West worth looking into that came after ancient Greece, but they are exceptional. The only time periods in the West that took eternal wisdom seriously again were the Italian Renaissance and the founding fathers of America as well as the transcendentalists like Emerson, kind of. But those guys probably won’t save you when it comes to our modern day problems. If you are a craftsman or artist, PLEASE study the Italian Renaissance masters, don’t let anyone stop you. If you are serious about starting a military revolution, by all means follow the American founders. But if you are seeking liberation, real eternal wisdom, the end of all suffering, NONE of those modern guys can help you. All we have left is the ancient masters in Greece, Egypt (good luck finding any documents), India and China, their wisdom traditions, and entheogens. Nothing else is GUARANTEED to work, trust me I’ve tried. Other things can work this time or that time, with this person or that person, but as far as a 100% money-back guarantee, we have to stick with what we know works.
Wisdom traditions can include; Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Kung Fu, Daoism, Yoga, Pranayama, Judo, Aikido, etc. Stoicism, Ethos, etc. These fancy words are simply the practices that come from the masters I’m talking about. And yes, the East is far more advanced than the West with wisdom, so something like Judo is incredibly effective and REAL, even though it’s not even 200 years old.
In closing I’ll just say I’m excited to write this, and have a strong feeling more content will come on this topic, I know it’s important for many people. My first advertisement could be about an online course in using ethos to vanquish fake news. This is exciting to me. Stay human, stay wise.
