There are No Rights

Here’s a fun thing you can do; open up your digital copy of the Ethos or the Bhagavad Gita or any other ancient text, and do a search for “rights.” Did you find anything? Probably not. The ancients NEVER spoke about rights, because there are no rights. It’s a postmodern fantasy.

Every infraction of human rights you can think of can also be categorized as a kind of injustice. That is, you can speak about these injustices effectively without ever mentioning rights. I won’t go into the history of it, but it seems like the term rights was made most popular by the American constitution and its bill of rights. By the way, I love the bill of rights and the US constitution, but when it comes to ethics, it’s childish talking about rights all the time.

Jordan Peterson gave us a glimpse of how its better to talk about responsibility than rights. That’s true. You could say that ethics is simply responsibility of one’s character. That’s a decent definition for Ethos at least.

According to Ethos, human rights, animal rights, etc. is best categorized under chapter 8 on justice. But it also applies to chapters 1 and 2, on what a human being is. Is there anything that is guaranteed to every single human being? Not really. Even if we say every human being has 2 arms and 2 legs, would not be true 100% of the time. So how can there be any kind of universal human right? We may have universal human desires, like pursuing happiness for example. Does that mean that when I infringe on another’s ability to pursue happiness that I infringed on their rights as a human? No, it just means I probably committed an injustice, and this actually happens all the time, and it’s been happening for millenia. We have an institution to deal with this stuff, it’s called the law, the court, etc.

I’m so agitated talking about this. It seems so obvious. Anyway, what is human rights according to Ananda, the Bhagavad Gita? This is also a nonsense term. As eternal living entities we are sat chit ananda, eternal knowledge and bliss. Everything that helps us remember that and identify with it is good, and everything taking us away from our essential nature is bad. That is how we get an ethical system out of Bhagavad Gita. It’s really simple. But there’s no rights…

There are no human rights, no animal rights, there are no rights. There is right and wrong, but there are no rights. A lawyer in USA may talk about the bill of rights, but that’s about it. In reality, according to God and nature, there are no rights. There are people. People can act virtuously or viciously, divinely or evil. That’s all folks.
